Officials: Shop in Seguin for holiday needs

Published November 24, 2009

SEGUIN — The city of Seguin is reminding everyone to shop local.

For the second year, the Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is running the “Shop Local Shop Seguin” campaign. But this holiday season, they have joined forces with the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Seguin to get the message to residents that Seguin is a great place to shop.

City manager Doug Faseler said the city of Seguin is taking extra steps to remind everyone to look first at local offerings.

“We will be putting these shop local fliers in the utility bills with the 10 reasons to shop local on them,” Faseler said. “We will also be putting the message on marquees like the one at the coliseum and we are urging local businesses to do the same. We’re hoping that everywhere you go, you’ll be reminded to shop local.”

Chamber members, business owners and city employees met on the steps of the Guadalupe County Courthouse on Monday to discuss the campaign.

Mayor Betty Ann Matthies made a proclamation endorsing the chambers and the city to encourage people to shop Seguin. The impact of the organizations combined sends a much stronger message, rather than if it was just one person, she said.

“I think it’s important to encourage people to shop locally. Not just around the holidays, but year-round,” Matthies said. “It has such a positive impact on our community. The locally spent dollars go toward funding community improvement projects, and have a much bigger impact that money spent elsewhere. And it keeps our local businesses going. Seguin’s local businesses help make our city unique, and it encourages our businesses when they see people shopping locally.”

Seguin area businesses aren’t the only ones that benefit from shopping locally, she said, the consumer also benefits by spending money close to home.

“If you think about it, really it’s much more economical to shop locally,” Matthies said. “You save money by not driving to San Antonio or Austin. You save money on shipping. You also save time by shopping here in Seguin.”

Shanta Kuhl with the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce said the partnership of the two chambers and the city is one that will benefit the community.

“I’m really excited we’re partnering on this together,” Kuhl said. “The dollars that are spent here in our stores are good for our community.”
