Akins bests Seguin
Published January 20, 2008
SEGUIN — The Seguin girls basketball team might be a program on the rise, but Akins still has a say in things.
Akins, the defending District 25-5A champion, received 15 points from Jackie Padilla and 10 from Tyra Dolphus on Friday as the Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Matadors, 56-44, at Goldie Harris Gymnasium.
With the win, Akins (9-14, 4-5 in 25-5A) moved into a fifth-place tie with Seguin (9-17, 4-5 in 25-5A) with five games to go. The team trail fourth-place Anderson (10-17, 5-4 in 25-5A) by a single game in the district standings, and Akins holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over Seguin because of a season-series sweep.
Akins also beat Seguin, 69-63, on Dec. 11, in Austin.
The Lady Matadors, who opened 25-5A play with a 3-1 record, have lost four of their last five contests since handing district leader Austin its only 25-5A loss, 43-40, on Jan. 2.
Seguin was led by Kindle Busch and Monnarae Martin, who scored 20 and 13 points, respectively.
Seguin hosts San Marcos at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
