Lady Bulldogs aiming for a return to playoffs
Published November 10, 2009
MARION — Head coach Kollyn McWhinney saw last season end in controversy, as the Wharton Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Bulldogs in the area round of the playoffs thanks to some extremely physical play.
(Ask Deidra Reasor how physical it got at one point.)
But there’s no reason why Marion can’t better its performance from a season ago, as four starters return to a team that went 19-15 overall and 8-4 in District 27-3A.
Included in that foursome is District 27-3A First Team guard Reyna Noriega, a senior that led the team in scoring in 2008-09. Add in seniors Ashley Jacobsen and Maegan Hartman and sophomore Kyana Fennell — last year’s District 27-3A Newcomer of the Year — as well as an experienced bench, and McWhinney has looks to have the makings of a very solid club from top to bottom.
“I have two more lettermen returning in Deidra Reasor and Rachel Farris,” McWhinney said. “I’m probably going to end up with anywhere from 12 to 14 (on the roster). There are four more seniors on the varsity — Megan Miles, Stephanie Montoya, Destiny Akin and Lesley Surman.”
But due to Marion’s solid play on the volleyball court, McWhinney isn’t completely sure of the final few spots on the roster. The coach said she’s still trying to get the multi-sport players switched into basketball mode.
“We just got six girls from the varsity volleyball team,” McWhinney said. “They’ve had one practice and one scrimmage. So right now we’re just trying to get the major things in, like offenses and just getting them going and then we’ll get to the details as the season goes on.”
After finishing second to district-winner Sam Houston last season, McWhinney said that she expects her team to challenge for the top spot this year, although the Lady Hurricanes will likely be right back in the mix.
“It’s going to be a battle between San Houston, us and Somerset for the top three spots,” McWhinney said. “And then you still have La Vernia, Luling and Poteet who all tied for third last year who are also pretty good.”
Besides a possible district crown, the Lady Bulldogs will look to advance past the area round this year while playing with the type of consistency that McWhinney says will only benefit her team in the long run.
“If we can pay at a certain level, then we want to make sure that we can play there every game,” she said. “If we’re playing a team that’s maybe not as good, don’t play down, and if we’re playing a really good team, don’t get intimidated and play to our level.”
Marion begins the season on the road tonight, facing Bandera at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Bulldogs will host their home tournament on Dec. 3-5 and open district play at home against Hawkins on Dec. 15.
