Local Lions offer events for all tastes

Published October 23, 2009

GUADALUPE COUNTY — Three local Lions Clubs are adding more fun to the Pecan Fest and Heritage Days festivities.

The Geronimo, Sunrise and Noon Lions have joined the celebration with food, exercise and hot rides all on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The Geronimo Lions Club is looking for cyclists to help them start the day with a brisk or leisurely ride through the county.

David Reiley, bike ride chairman and biking enthusiast, said this is a good morning cruise and a chance to meet other cyclists.

“What I like about it is I know the territory and it is nice to get out there with new people and let them come visit your back yard and show what we have to offer here in Seguin and around the community,” he said. “We have a couple from Dallas, some from Leander, around the Houston area, Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels and Seguin.”

“They are coming in from as far away as about 250 miles.”

Cyclists will be able to choose one of several courses to travel, Reiley said.

“There are four different routes — 15, 30, 45, 62 mile routes. The 15 mile is just around Geronimo, Huber and Barbarossa roads,” he said. “The other routes go out toward Marion, New Berlin and then come through the south side of Seguin.”

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with a $30 fee and the ride begins at 8:30 a.m.

The cost covers the ride, a small gift for entrants and a post-ride meal for the cyclist, Reiley said.

Putting a little extra muscle in to the day, the Sunrise Lion’s Club is hosting their third annual car show at Central Park on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Greg Winters, car show chairman, said anyone can join in the chance to show off their rides.

“Any automobile is fair game, everything from the classics to the modern day stuff,” he said.

For $25, each entry will receive a gift and a chance to win first, second or third place in one of eight categories.

The Noon Lions along with the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center (the Big Red Barn) is extending an invitation for a steak dinner, as prepared as part of the club’s Second Guadalupe Valley Championship Steak Cookoff.

Charles Villeneuve, cookoff committee member, said the event is open to anybody — but prospective teams need to call to ensure a spot to cook prior to the event.

“Anyone can enter the competition but they need to call A. G. Hodges by the end of Friday to guarantee they will be able to compete,” he said.

Entry fees are $200 for teams and registration starts at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Judging will start at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $15 and that includes a 12-ounce cook’s choice rib eye served with a baked potato and a salad.

For more information on the cookoff, call 830-372-1927.

While there will be plenty going on, the recent weather did lead to the cancellation of the Pecan Fest and Heritage Days’ first tractor pull.
