Morning fire destroys Kingsbury home

Published December 23, 2009

KINGSBURY — A pair of homeowners in Kingsbury will be looking for a new place to live after a pre-dawn blaze destroyed their home.

County fire crews were called to a battle the fire at 4:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of FM 1104.

Kingsbury Fire Chief Bill Harboth said a pair of homeowners were awakened by a blaze that started in a spare room and, in turn, devoured the rest of their home.

“In the bedroom where the fire started there was a mattress that was burning,” he said.

Upon arrival the small structure was compromised by the flames, Harboth said.

“I had one of my guys who came from south of the location and when he got on scene the structure was fully involved,” he said.

Due to the design of the building and materials it was constructed with it created an easy path of destruction for the flames, Harboth said.

“The house was pretty much gone by the time we got on the scene,” he said. “It burned pretty quickly.”

The spread of the fire was quick, catching a nearby utility shed on fire, Harboth said.

“There was a garage type of storage shed behind it and that was involved on one side,” he said. “For all practical purposes we lost most of it but we were able to save some of their stuff by pulling it out of there.”

Three of the homeowners’ vehicles were also destroyed by the blaze causing more damage than just the loss of the house.

Both of the homeowners escaped unharmed, Harboth said.

“There were no injuries reported, but they were pretty devastated because they pretty much lost everything,” he said.

To aid in Kingsbury’s efforts trucks from Luling Fire Department and the Sand Hills Volunteer Fire Department brought extra man-power to battle the inferno, Harboth said.

The fire appears to be accidental but the incident is still under investigation, Harboth said.

“I don’t suspect arson, I think it’s accidental,” he said. “It’s a bad thing right before Christmas to lose your house.”
