SEGUIN — A 54-year-old Seguin woman narrowly escaped injury or death Saturday morning when her car collided with a freight train.
Seguin Police Department Crime Prevention Officer Billy Rodriguez said Diana Reyes was forced to jump from her vehicle seconds before it collided with a slow-moving Burlington, Northern and Santa Fe Railroad cement train near the Austin Street crossing.
Her car, a 1999 Mustang, was demolished in the accident.
Rodriguez said Reyes was northbound on Austin Street approaching the crossing as its arms began to lower for an approaching eastbound train at about 10:25 a.m.
“She said she was going too fast to stop, so she veered to the left and went around the arms,” Rodriguez said.
Reyes’s car became caught on the tracks with one set of tires inside the rails and another outside, and couldn’t get off, Rodriguez said, traveling westbound about 70 feet and into the oncoming train.
Reyes bailed out just before the impact, and was able to get clear, Rodriguez said.
The train dragged the car about two-tenths of a mile, he said.
Austin Street was closed at the tracks for about two hours while the car was removed.
