Lifegate lights up CASA 84-60

Published August 30, 2009

SAN ANTONIO — The Lifegate Falcons (1-0) didn’t just win a football game Friday night.

They made a statement.

The Falcons shattered the school record for most points scored in a game (previously 69) by hanging 84 points on the Christian Academy of San Antonio Rams (0-1) to both avenge last year’s season opening loss and put Lifegate on the fast track to possibly one of its most impressive seasons yet.

“Every time we touched the ball we scored, so you can’t fault anybody there — we just had a really good effort,” said head coach John Rabon. “And defensively, you know, we allowed 60 points, but we had five stops. (CASA’s) a very good team.”

A few of the Falcons’ defensive stands came in a dominant first-quarter performance. Lifegate outscored CASA 31-7 in the opening period of play, staking its claim to the contest early and often.

Four different players found the end zone in the opening quarter, beginning with senior Austin Swick’s 10-yard scoring run. Swick would also kick the point after, which counts for two points in the six-man game.

After CASA added seven points of its own, the Falcons went immediately back to work, as junior Matt Akin returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards to pay dirt.

It was the first of a team-high five scores for Akin on the day.

Just seconds later, Lifegate regained possession of the ball and senior Kolton Coffman showed his skills, hitting freshman Tyler Swisher for an eight-yard touchdown toss. On the next drive, Coffman found himself on the opposite end of a one-yard touchdown pass from Swick.

After that, the rout was officially on — a feat made even more impressive by the fact that the Falcons were doing so with only a fraction of their roster.

“Because of the injuries and other things, we only took nine players and then we lost one, so we ended up playing two and a half quarters with eight players,” Rabon said. “It was a good game, everybody played a lot and my freshman came in and did an excellent job, so I was real pleased with getting the win.

“That was the most points we’ve ever scored, and in the last two minutes, we just ran time of the clock by kneeling the ball.”

CASA outscored Lifegate 28-25 in the second quarter, thanks in part to Daniel and Bobby Ramirez, who had a hand in each one of their team’s scores.

Still, the Falcons proved too be too strong to allow any type of comeback, adding four more scores before halftime — a 72-yard kick return form Swick, two shorts runs by Akin and a 40-yard connection from Akin to Swisher.

The Rams later added a touchdown just as time expired on the first half of play, making the score 56-35 at the break.

Talk about a defensive coordinator’s worst nightmare.

“Their spread back, we won’t see a better one than him,” Rabon said. “He could cut on a dime and just change direction and we’d chase him and he’d get two yards from the line of scrimmage and see somebody open and he’d just pull up and throw it.”

The Falcons proved that their strength is their overall talent, as Swick and Akin added two more scores apiece in the second half to keep CASA at bay.

In all, Lifegate scored 12 touchdowns, converted four two-point kicks and added four more one-point conversion attempts.

Swick finished barely behind Akin with four scores, while Swisher added two in his varsity debut. Coffman crossed the goal line once for the Falcons.

And all of this adds up to one easy-to-read bottom line — Lifegate may have something special in store for 2009.

“We’ve just got to get a little better every week and so far, we have,” Rabon said. “Hopefully we’re going to end up with 12 players, but right now we’re limited, so hopefully they’ll all get well and get their things taken care of so we’ll get to use these first games to kind of get in better shape and really get things going.

“I think we’ve got a chance to go to the playoffs, and once you get in the playoffs, it’s anybody’s game.”

The Falcons will play another 5:30 p.m. contest this Friday, welcoming Austin Christian to Seguin for Lifegate’s home opener.
