Marion, Lifegate both sharp at tourneys
Published August 25, 2009
DEVINE — The Marion volleyball team (8-2 overall) continued its stellar early-season play over the weekend, earning third place at the Devine Tournament.
After going 3-0 on Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs opened Saturday with another win, sweeping Midland Greenwood 25-8, 25-22.
Shelby Thomas led the way with six kills, followed by five from Diana Heinrich’s and four each from Ashley Jacobsen and Deidra Reasor. Jacobsen also led the team in assists, with 10, while Shay Caddell notched six aces.
The Lady Bulldogs’ only loss of the tournament came during what head coach Bernice Voigt called “a very intense” semifinal match with St. Mary’s Hall, as Marion was barely edged 2-1 (24-26, 25-23, 28-25).
Jacobsen added 15 more kills in the loss, with Lauren Franke posting 15 assists and Ashley Torres contributing 10 digs. Jacobsen also had eight assists and three aces.
Marion would avenge its loss, though, defeating host Devine 2-1 (12-25, 25-20, 25-23) in the third-place match. In the finale, Jacobsen posted volleyball’s version of a triple-double, notching 18 kills, 10 assists and 10 digs en route to being selected to the all-tournament team.
Franke once again led her squad in assists, dishing out 17, while Reasor added nine kills.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the court tonight, hosting Natalia at 6:15 p.m. in the team’s home opener.
Lady Falcons soar at Sunnybrook
SAN ANTONIO — The Lifegate Lady Falcons competed in the Sunnybrook Tournament Friday and Saturday, compiling a 4-2 record over the weekend.
Lifegate began bracket play in its first tournament of the year with a 2-1 loss (25-14, 21-25, 16-14) to Rainbow Hills Friday, but the Lady Falcons would keep their composure, storming through the loser’s bracket and later avenging the early defeat.
Saturday’s slate began at 8 a.m. and saw Lifegate swept Tribe Consolidated 2-0 (25-9, 25-10) before beating St. Gerard in three games (25-10, 22-25, 15-6).
That set up an afternoon rematch with Rainbow Hills, which the Lady Falcons took full advantage of, winning 2-1 (25-23, 17-25, 15-8).
The winning streak wouldn’t end there, as Lifegate then swept host Sunnybrook in two games (25-20, 25-20), sending the Lady Falcons into the next round against Cornerstone Christian School of San Antonio.
Unfortunately, that’s where the impressive run came to a halt, as Cornerstone prevailed in a closely-contested three-game match, winning 25-21, 25-27, 16-14.
Lifegate left Sunnybrook with a respectable third-place trophy and even some accolades as well. Senior outside hitter Jasmin Flowers received the Best All-Around Tournament Medal for her performance at the tournament, in which her team played a total of 16 games (six matches) in just two days.
The Lady Falcons’ next tournament test comes Friday when they compete at CASA. Lifegate’s home opener, originally set for Monday, has been rescheduled for tonight at 6 p.m.
