SHS drama both dark and hopeful

Published April 2, 2009

The Seguin High School’s one–act troupe will be taking to the stage Friday — in their last chance to perfect their performance before the district competition.

Seguin High School drama teacher Shelia Lucas said “Digging up the Boys” is a dramatic piece that the students are able to learn from.

“It is written by a Texas playwright and the story was just so compelling about the coal miners that were trapped, the family situations and the family relationships,” she said. “It is a play about character relationships and it is very character-driven.”

Grabbing the role of the foreman of the mine, senior Fransciso Lopez said that the drama is realistic and gripping.

“It is generally about the coal mining lifestyle and it deals with a disaster that happened and how the community tries to cope with it,” Lopez said.

Being one with his character was a little bit of a struggle, Lopez said.

“It’s been really difficult to relate to him, considering how old he is,” he said. “He struggles with personal decisions regarding selling out people, it’s probably the hardest to deal with and relate to.”

Playing the daughter of one of the trapped miners, sophomore Lauren Hunt agreed that her performance was also demanding.

“I can relate to her in the fact that we are the same age, but I have never felt the anguish that she feels,” Hunt said. “I have lost people that are close to me, but I could not imagine what she was going through having her father die this horrible death.”

Learning how to cope with tragedies is just part of what this play teaches the students, Lucas said.

“It deals with the subject of death and for them to grasp that at this young age is challenging,” she said. “It deals with a natural disaster — or man-made — depending on how you interpret the story line. All the characters deal with it all in different ways and yet they are trying to find different levels and different depths to the characters through out the play.”

Even though the play is a little dark, stage manager senior JoAnn Washum said, it is not all storm clouds.

“It’s a very hopeful piece, even though it based off of a sad plot line, there is an underlining feeling of hope the whole way through,” Washum said. “The girls deal with major obstacles, but their strength pulls them through it. It teaches you to always move on and to always keep that hope even though there is all of this tragedy around you.”

The one–act troupe will be preforming for the public Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Seguin High School Auditorium, and for judges on Saturday at Samuel Clemens High School for the district competition.
