Mavericks deny Bulldogs 44-21 in Pearsall

Published September 6, 2009

PEARSALL — The Marion Bulldogs came out Friday night in Pearsall looking for their first win of the year, but came up short as they fell 44-21 to the Mavericks.

Despite going into halftime with a one-point lead, the Bulldogs couldn’t seem to get the spark they needed to come out with the victory. The loss leaves the Bulldogs at 0-2 on the season.

The Mavericks started the game off strong, as they scored on their second play — a 69-yard touchdown run from Austin Embry with 9:56 left in the first quarter. Pearsall’s defense played exceptionally well also, as they held the Bulldogs from scoring on each of their first four possessions.

Marion’s special teams came up big early by blocking a Maverick punt, leaving the Bulldogs’ offense with first and goal from the Pearsall eight-yard line with 5:22 remaining in the second quarter. Marion was able to capitalize on the Mavericks’ mistake, with Sean Hesler accounting for all eight yards, completing the drive with a one-yard touchdown scramble with 3:10 left before halftime.

Austin Langemeier tacked on the extra point to tie the score at 7-7.

The excitement didn’t last long for the Bulldogs, as Maverick Tyler Del Toro returned the following kickoff back 88-yards for a score. A missed extra point left the score at 13-7 with just enough time left for Marion to go to work.

The Bulldog offense quickly responded once again, putting together a 61-yard scoring drive that was capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Hesler to Nathayn DeHoyos with just four seconds remaining. Langemeier made the extra point kick, putting the Bulldogs up 14-13 going into halftime.

“I think our offense performed well,” said offensive lineman and defensive end Devon Pierce. “We had a few minor mistakes but we were still able to move the ball pretty well. Offensively, we need to work on picking up blitzes to give Sean a little more time in the pocket to throw the ball. Defensively, we’re going to have to get better at defending the run. We’ll just keep learning from our mistakes and use them to get better every week.”

A mishandled snap on a punt attempt for Marion late in the third quarter gave the Mavericks a short field to work with on the Bulldogs’ 35-yard line.

Pearsall took advantage of that mistake and quickly scored on a two-yard touchdown run by Embry. Embry also added the two point conversion to give the Mavericks a 21-14 lead with just 28 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Marion’s Derek Pierce later recovered a fumbled punt by Pearsall, but the Bulldogs gave the ball right back on a Rene Gonzalez interception with 10:04 to go in the game. The Mavericks then compiled a 95-yard scoring drive, completed by a Mario Camacho 46-yard touchdown catch with just under seven minutes left in the game. The Jose Robles extra point made the score 28-14 in the favor of Pearsall.

Hesler brought some spark back into the Bulldog sideline with a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown with 4:31 to go, and Langemeier’s kick closed the gap to 28-21.

As before, the Mavericks quickly calmed the Bulldogs’ hype, as Embry returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs then dug themselves into a deeper hole, as Hesler was sacked in the end zone for a safety with just 2:33 to go in the game, leaving the score 37-31.

Del Toro added a 35-yard touchdown on the following possession with 1:15 left, proving to be the last score of the game for either team.

Hesler led his squad in passing, completing 16 of 30 attempts for 110 yards, while Nathayn DeHoyyos went over the century mark, catching eight passes for 110 yards.

Hunter Brietzke led the team in rushing with 21 yards on six carries, as Marion had trouble on the ground all night, gaining only 49 yards on 26 attempts.

But all told, the offense had a much better night than a week ago, totaling 283 yards of offense.

The Bulldogs will look to earn their first win against Cole High School Friday at 7:30 p.m. in San Antonio.
