GUADALUPE COUNTY — One person was killed and three others injured in a head-on collision on State Highway 123 Saturday night.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman in San Antonio said Jacob J. Rakofski, 20, was pronounced dead at Central Texas Medical Center shortly after the 8:34 p.m. accident near the intersection of State Highway 123 and FM 1978.
Three passengers in the car Rakofski was riding in suffered injuries described as severe bruising. All were taken to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin where they were treated for their injuries and later released.
According to a report filed by New Braunfels-based DPS Trooper Randy Vick, the collision occurred when a 1988 Chevy pickup driven by Cruz T. Lucio of San Marcos turned right onto northbound SH 123 from FM 1978, lost control and crossed the double-yellow center line into the path of a southbound 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Simon J. Wilkins, 24.
Weather conditions at the time of the accident were wet and foggy, the DPS reported. The report did not say whether investigators believe the weather contributed to the collision.
With the exception of Rakofski, all other passengers in the Grand Marquis were wearing seatbelts, and two of them were uninjured. All were reportedly Texas State University students.
No citations had been issued Monday, but the accident remained under investigation.
