Skate park to celebrate with birthday bash

Published July 25, 2010

SEGUIN — Family and friends will continue to honor the memory of a local skater with a birthday celebration.

On Thursday, July 29 from 6:30-9 p.m. the Seguin Activity Center is hosting Mike’s Birthday Bash in honor of the skate park’s namesake Michael Raetzsch.

“That would have been my son’s 24th birthday and we figured this would be a good time to have an event at the skate park that is named after him,” said Beth Raetzsch.

The evening celebration will offer the opportunity for skate enthusiasts to ride the rails and show off their skills for free, Beth said.

“They are going to play a game of SKATE — which is very similar to PIG in basketball — where someone starts out by doing a trick on their skateboard and you try to follow and do the same trick,” she said. “It is mostly going to be open skating for any of the kids that want to skate.”

SAC executive director Dana Malaer said participants will get a chance to showcase their talents.

“We want them to skate and show off their tricks,” she said. “This will be a day to kind of kick off our skate board design contest and a few other things that we are doing.”

In fashion with a traditional birthday celebration, Malaer said there will be refreshments.

“It’s in remembrance of Mike’s birthday. We are going to have cake and pizza and drinks for the kids,” she said. “This is to honor him as a skater and everybody else that skates and everybody skates because they love the sport and he loved the sport.”

Before his death, Michael had a big hand in creating a skate park at the Activity Center, Beth said.

“He was one of the young people that was instrumental in getting funds and things for the first skate park,” she said. “He loved to skate and I know he would have been thrilled that it had been rebuilt.”

Mike’s Ledge is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturdays noon - 6 p.m., and Sundays 4-7 p.m. depending on the amount of skaters, Malaer said.

“We do have lights and we do a Friday Night Lights where they can skate on Friday nights and on Saturday evenings we open the center and the skate park,” she said. “ If we do not have 10 or more skaters we will close down early.”
