FISCHER — The Navarro volleyball team (22-14, 7-3) had little trouble taking down Johnson City in the bi-district round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year, posting a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-7, 25-7) Monday night at Canyon Lake High School.
With the win, the Lady Panthers advanced to face Salado in a match set for 7 p.m. in Bastrop on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
Against the Lady Eagles, senior Hannah Bonds recorded 13 kills to lead her squad, while senior Sydawnie Douglass had another solid all-around contest, posting 11 kills, two aces and a block and a half.
Setter Kandace Newton contributed a team-best 10 assists in the win, while Dani Schmidt and Sadie Bonds capitalized on their playing time with three and two assists, respectively.
Schmidt also added an ace, while Hayley Franzen had four digs to lead Navarro’s defensive effort.
Noelle Kubenka added three digs to go along with her four kills, with Casey Braun chipping in five kills and a block.
Marissa Gutierrez had two digs for head coach Jackie Baker’s team, while Kristian Barry served an ace. Samantha Nichols also came through with two kills, and Stephanie Moeller finished with one kill and one block.
Christway bests Lifegate
PLANO — The Lady Falcons (17-8, 8-0) finished their run in the 2009 playoffs Saturday after running into defending state finalist Duncanville Christway.
Christway’s powerful serving and hitting were too much for Lifegate to overcome, as Duncanville advanced to the state tournament with a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-17, 25-23).
Junior Jasmin Flowers — recently named the district’s Most Valuable Player — had 14 kills and one assist in the match, while senior Sandy Schneider had one kill and one block in her last match as a Lady Falcon. Fellow senior Allison Schaeffer had two assists, one ace serve, 13 digs and 11 service receives.
“(Sandy) had a great match for her final one,” said head coach Jennifer Hines. “Allison hustled and played hard to lead the Falcons.”
Senior Jessica Ramirez posted three aces and 11 assists in the loss, while Crystal Ramirez recorded eight digs, 12 service receives and an ace.
Sophomore Adriana Morales had three aces, three assists and three digs Saturday, while freshman Katelin Psencik chipped in three kills, a block and an ace, proving that Lifegate will likely be right back in the hunt next year.
“The ladies will come back stronger and more experienced for next season,” Hines said.
