Marion boys unable to knock off Somerset

Published December 23, 2009

MARION — Just one game into the district schedule, it’s already become apparent that no team in District 27-3A can afford to take a trip to Marion lightly.

The Bulldogs (8-6, 0-1) showed their meddle by rallying from a 12-point first-quarter deficit to take the lead against No. 15-ranked Somerset (12-1, 1-0) in the second half of Tuesday night’s district opener, later falling just short.

As it turned out, the visitors were the ones who proved to have the final say, slowly pulling away in the fourth quarter to earn a hard-fought 63-52 win.

“I’m never going to doubt our kids’ effort,” Marion head coach Jon Allen said. “Late in the game is where we don’t execute as well as we need to. We missed a few lay-ups here and a few free throws there and let that lead just kind of balloon.”

Down 27-17 in the latter half of the second quarter, Marion made its first major run of the game, using three free throws by Derek Pierce and a three-pointer by Nathayn DeHoyos to cut Somerset’s advantage to four by halftime.

Pierce then showed why he’s one of the best budding big men in the area after the break, scoring 10 points in the third period to lead a charge that saw Marion take a 37-36 lead.

The efforts of starting point guard Oscar Rhodes shouldn’t be overlooked either, as the junior set up Pierce with great passes on back-to-back buckets and later found senior Matt Radtke for the go-ahead score.

But from there, Pierce spent some time on the bench — at first thought to be a side effect from the sophomore getting whistled for a third foul. Come to find out, Pierce scored 20 points while battling a respiratory infection.

“He was a little sick coming into the game,” Allen said. “That didn’t help him at all, so I took him out more for that than the fouls.”

Somerset took advantage of Pierce’s time off the court, going on a quick 8-0 run that saw them nail a three just before the third-quarter buzzer and hit another trey on the opening possession of the fourth.

That gave the blue-clad Bulldogs a seven-point lead — one that they wouldn’t let go of for the rest of the evening.

“We’re able to play with anybody — I tell them that,” Allen said following the loss. “We’ve just got to find out what that extra thing is to get us over the hump.”

DeHoyos added 10 points in the loss, followed by seven from Rhodes and six from Radtke.

Austin Langemeier scored five, with Alex Eicher contributing four.

The Bulldogs will hit the court again on Dec. 28, competing in the Devine Tournament.

Mats take down Rattlers

SEGUIN — On Monday night, the Seguin boys notched a win over their rivals from just down Highway 123, beating San Marcos 55-47.

The Matadors (8-9) trailed by one going into halftime, but rallied to outscore the visiting Rattlers 35-26 in the second half, securing a nice win heading into the holiday break.

Jason Even scored 17 points to lead his squad, followed by 10 from sophomore Zachary Cresap.

Guard Andrew Flores chipped in nine, with Ryan Tovar adding seven and Brig Gerlich putting in five.

Starting point guard Kevin McClure made his return to the court after suffering an ankle injury on Dec. 14, scoring three, while the duo of Rodney Durst and Jordan Leal each finished with two.

Seguin will be back in action on Dec. 29, playing a game at Central Catholic at 2:30 p.m.
