Lifegate welcomes Bellville Faith

Published September 25, 2009

SEGUIN — Thus far, Friday nights have brought nothing but success for the Lifegate Falcons (4-0 overall).

Lifegate’s offense has put up a combined 235 points in four games, while the defense has looked better each week, holding an opponent to just a single touchdown on two occasions — including last week’s 56-6 mercy-rule win over Austin NYOS.

It certainly looks as if everything is falling right into place for head coach John Rabon.

“I just felt if we could improve our kicking game and improve our defense to go along with the offense, we’d be in good shape — and we’ve done that,” Rabon said. “Offensively, Brad (Akin’s) done a good job of calling plays and the kids are obviously executing.”

This week, the Falcons will welcome in Bellville Faith — a team that has had its problems while staggering to an 0-3 start in 2009. After barely edging the Knights 69-65 a year ago, Rabon says that Bellville lost quite a few players and is struggling with its inexperience.

“They’re in kind of a down year this year,” Rabon said. “They graduated four or five seniors last year and they didn’t have a whole lot of kids come out — they have less than we have.

“They’re playing with seven kids and they’re all young, so I don’t want to overlook them, but this may be a good chance for some of my younger guys to get to play a little bit more.”

But only if starters like Matt Akin, Austin Swick and Caleb Tate can put the game away, that is.

Fortunately, that hasn’t been a problem to this point, as the trio has combined to score 29 touchdowns this year — and that’s not even factoring in the defensive presence that the Akin/Tate combination brings to each contest.

Against NYOS, Tate played like a wild man, recording 14 tackles and four sacks, while Akin notched 10 total tackles himself.

And in other good news for the Falcons, Rabon hopes to have his biggest squad yet along the sidelines tonight.

“I’m gradually getting more guys back,” Rabon said. “It looks like I’ll have 10 suited up and that’s the most I’ve had all year.”

But as the coach mentioned, there’s no room for his team to get overconfident — even against a team that has been outscored 170-12 this year.

“We talked a little bit in practice about not looking down the road,” Rabon said. “We’ve got to take it one week at a time and really focus on those guys.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Lifegate Christian School.
