Seguin group offers prime parade view

Published June 30, 2009

The key to enjoying a parade is finding a shady spot with a good view.

But this year, spectators won’t have to arrive hours early to find that perfect vantage point. For just a few dollars, parade enthusiasts can enjoy breakfast, refreshments, goodie bags and a shady view of the “Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade,” courtesy of the Seguin Conservation Society.

Marty Keil, Seguin Conservation Society vice president, said the organization will be setting up 120 spots in front of the famous Texas Theater and the former Seguin Chamber of Commerce building for a covered view of the July 4th parade.

“It was just a wonderful opportunity for people to view the parade in shade and for them to also be a part of the refurbishing of the theater and to see what things are happening,” she said.

Utilizing the newly acquired former Chamber of Commerce building, the society will be seating visitors under tents and will serve light eats and refreshing drinks from inside the building, Keil said.

“We are going to be in air-conditioned comfort this year, since we now have the old chamber,” she said. “Along with serving breakfast tacos, fruit, pastries and juice, we’ll offer adult beverages, juices, sodas and water from Nash Family Catering.”

All of the funds raised will go directly into the capital campaign for the restoration of the The Stephen and Mary Birch Texas Theatre, originally built in 1931, Keil said.

The Texas Theater, which is about to undergo renovations, will be open to allow those passing by to check out the inside, she added.

After all of the renovations are complete the historic landmark will be connected to the chamber building just north of the theater and is expected to provide a venue for various community arts events.

For curb-side seating, chairs are $35 and for the rest of the seats the cost is $25. Right now, about 70 of the seats already sold. For reservations, call Marty Keil at 830-303-7333 or send her an e-mail at m.keil(at)sbcglobal.net .

Tax-deductible contributions for the Capital Campaign can be sent to P.O. Box 245, Seguin, TX 78155.
