Odd shooting is under investigation

Published May 6, 2009

SEGUIN — Detectives are working to determine how a 20-year-old Seguin man got shot Monday night — reportedly while walking along Belmarez Avenue.

Seguin Police Detective Lt. Johnny San Miguel said officers were called to the 1400 block of Belmarez at 10 p.m. Monday for a reported shooting.

They arrived to find Justin Lee Gonzales, 20, laying across the hood of a car.

San Miguel said Gonzales told police officers he needed help.

“He said, ‘Get me an ambulance,’” San Miguel said. “‘I’ve been shot in the leg.’”

When they checked, they found he’d been shot in the abdomen, San Miguel said.

“The officers noted a bullet hole in his stomach, about three inches above the belly button,” San Miguel said.

San Miguel said the investigation would be conducted by Detective Sgt. Gilbert Solis.

“The responding officers asked who shot him, and he said he didn’t know,” San Miguel said. “His girlfriend said she was walking with him, began walking away and heard the shot fired.”

San Miguel said investigators would be talking to other potential witnesses.

“There are other witnesses we have to follow up on,” San Miguel said. “We don’t know what happened.”

Gonzales was flown to University Hospital in San Antonio where he was listed in stable condition Tuesday.

San Miguel said the small-caliber automatic believed used in the shooting was found hidden in a nearby tree.

“After the shooting, someone apparently tried to hide the weapon,” San Miguel said.
