Seguin invited to stop and smell the roses

Published April 1, 2009

SEGUIN — A little bit of jazz music and some tasty hor d’oeuvers in the rose garden lit by the moon can prove to be a romantic evening out or it can be a good family outing.

The Moonlight and Roses Event presented by the Main Street Program on Friday, April 3 from 7–9 p.m. in the Memorial Rose Garden near the intersection of Donegan and Travis streets behind the Guadalupe County Annex, is not just for the romantic couple but for everyone, said Main Street Program Director Mary Jo Filip.

“It is a neighborhood block party but the whole town is invited,” she said. “It is a pleasant event that started about 10 years ago. We started it to bring attention to the beauty of the area.”

Although the calender is showing a first quarter moon, Filip said it will not be the only one shining in the rose garden.

“There will be a beautiful moon hanging from the trees that will have been artificially incorporated into the setting,” she said.

Filling the air with sultry sounds, a musician from San Antonio, along with a couple of friends, help create an enjoyable atmosphere.

“The jazz trio is mainly background music for people to gather and chat and have a cold beverage of their choice,” Filip said. “People can meet groups of friends or they can come alone instead of sitting at home.”

Enjoying the tunes of the songs of the evening while not be the only reward, Filip said.

“We will be naming our ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and our ‘Downtowner of the Year’ and the mayor will be on hand to present the awards,” she said.

Filip said they have been offering the commemorated glasses since the event started, and proceeds from the sale benefit the upkeep of the gardens and other city beautification projects. This year, the event will also include a new way for residents to give back, Filip said.

“We are going to have a raffle this year,” she said. “The local flower shops have donated bouquets of flowers and plants, along with the Mosheim Mansion, which has donated some accommodations for the raffle.”

Even though there will be some hors d’oeuvres that have been contributed to evening, Filip recommends that visitors bring their own seats and beverages.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (830) 401-5000.
