Lady Matadors upended in Kerrville
Published January 31, 2010
KERRVILLE — A win by the Seguin girls basketball team Friday night would have allowed the Lady Matadors (17-15, 2-7) to temporarily jump New Braunfels Canyon for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 27-4A.
The Lady Antlers, however, weren’t feeling particularly generous, notching a 54-41 win at home to split the season series with Seguin.
No statistics were available for the Lady Matadors, who get back to action on Tuesday, hosting Alamo Heights at 7 p.m.
Seguin took the first meeting against the Lady Mules 45-38 on Jan. 8.
Lady Bulldogs clinch playoff berth
LULING — Marion (22-4, 9-1) remained red hot in district play Friday night, posting a 63-58 win over Luling to sweep the season series with the Lady Eagles.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs also sewed up a playoff spot and assured that they will enter the postseason as no lower than the No. 2 seed out of District 27-3A.
Sophomore Kyana Fennell and senior Maegan Hartman paced their squad with 16 points apiece against Luling, with Fennell adding eight rebounds and two steals, while Hartman also contributed three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Reserve guard Deidra Reasor added eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs, with senior Ashley Jacobsen adding seven points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Sophomore Rachel Farris added another double-digit rebounding performance by grabbing 10 boards, also putting in six points and blocking seven shots.
Senior Reyna Noriega chipped in five points, three rebounds and three assists in the victory.
The Lady Bulldogs’ next game is against Sam Houston at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. Marion must defeat the Lady Hurricanes if they hope to keep their district title hopes alive.
TLU women take down Sul Ross
ALPINE — The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team remained in the hunt for an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament berth with an 85-66 win at Sul Ross State on Thursday.
The Bulldogs moved to 10-7 overall and to 9-5 in the ASC West Division. The win keeps TLU in third place in the ASC West standings. The Bulldogs have 1-1/2 game leads over both Hardin-Simmons and McMurry in the division race.
TLU trails Mary Hardin-Baylor and Howard Payne in the ASC West standings.
Against Sul Ross in the Gallego Center, TLU rolled to a 43-23 halftime lead behind eight first-half three-pointers and held off a Lobos rally in the second half.
Sul Ross cut the TLU lead down to nine with 10 minutes to play, but the Bulldogs closed the game with a 27-15 advantage over the Lobos.
Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Munoz scored 11 of her 13 in the first half.
Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) and Allie Beach (Orange/Orangefield) each added 12 points. The 12 points for Beach are a career-high. She was 5-for-7 from the field.
Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) dished out 10 assists and had only one turnover. Doyle also scored 10 points.
The Bulldogs traveled to Brownwood on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game with Howard Payne. The result of that contest will be printed in Tuesday’s edition of the Gazette Enterprise.
Navarro girls’ upset bid falls short
GERONIMO — Despite a good defensive effort, the Lady Panthers couldn’t solve No. 16 Poth Friday night, falling 45-33 to the Pirettes.
Navarro (14-13, 3-4) found itself down just 21-17 at halftime, but Poth’s tandem of Tara Broyles and Tara Dunn combined for 33 points to help keep the Lady Panthers at bay.
Still, Navarro got a solid game from senior Samantha Nichols, who put in 10 points to lead her squad.
Behind her was junior Burgandy Partain, who put in nine in the loss, and the duo of junior Casey Braun and sophomore Valerie Vrana, who each finished with four.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Panthers were the trio of Erica Conover, Sierra Willams and Diana Besa, who chipped in two points apiece.
Next up for head coach Darrell Harborth’s team is a trip to Kenedy to square off with the Lady Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
