Lloyd Wenzel
Lloyd Wenzel was born in Laubach, Texas, on June 3, 1922, to Annie (Gombert) and Robert Wenzel. He “took his last flight” on July 13, 2009, in Jupiter, Fla.
He is predeceased by his parents, sister, Inez Ramsay and daughter, Meredith.
Lloyd began his military career in 1942 in the Army Air Corps. He was a P-38 fighter pilot during WWII, flying 72 combat missions in Western Europe. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters, the European Theater Ribbon with 6 Battle Stars, and several campaign medals.
Lloyd finished up his 30 year Air Force career as an early director of the F-15 fighter aircraft program in charge of its joint engine project. He then worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft as contract administrator for the F-100 engine which powered the F-15 until retiring in Florida in the mid 1980s.
Survivors include his wife, Carol and daughter Kathryn of Florida and children Lynda, John and Robert of Texas as well as 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Services were held on July 17, 2009, at South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL with full military honors.
