LULING — The Navarro boys varsity basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat the Luling Eagles 58-40 on Tuesday at Luling.
Navarro trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, but then outscored the Eagles in each of the last three quarters to seal a victory. Navarro led, 23-18, at halftime, and 39-30 after three quarters before outscoring Luling, 19-10, in the fourth.
The Panthers used a halfcourt defense to cause Luling to turn the ball over on numerous occasions with a number of baskets off of fast breaks to take the win.
The leading scorers for Navarro were Zach Hernandez with 23, followed by Will Valdez with 10 and Clayton Warren with 9.
Wesley Ply was the leading rebounder with eight boards, followed by A.K. Williams with five. Jacob Garcia led in steals with two.
This was Navarro’s first game of the season, and they will play St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday at Navarro High School. The varsity game is slated to tip off at 3 p.m.
Saturday’s game will be closely followed by a contests at Leander Vista Ridge on Monday.
