SOMERSET — Thanks to a 67-53 win over Somerset Tuesday night, the Lady Bulldogs will go into the Christmas break holding a share of first place in the District 27-3A standings.
Marion (13-3, 3-0) kept its district mark spotless by jumping out on the opposing Lady Bulldogs early and denying a comeback bid late, racing out to a 23-10 first-quarter advantage before watching the home team fire back.
Somerset countered with a 17-9 win in the second quarter and later cut Marion’s lead to three after outdueling head coach Kollyn McWhinney’s team 20-18 in the third period.
No matter. Marion’s Lady Bulldogs had plenty of firepower remaining for the final eight minutes, outscoring Somerset 17-6 to put the game away for good and head into the holidays on a high note.
Marion saw three players score in double-figures in the win, including senior Reyna Noriega, who put in a game-high 19 points in the victory.
Senior Kyana Fennell added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while fellow senior Ashley Jacobsen recorded 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Rachel Farris added seven points and 13 boards, while guard Haley Jupe chipped in four points.
Forward Hailey Speer contributed three points and six rebounds from the low post.
After some time off, the Lady Bulldogs will begin play at the Weimar Tournament on Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Lady Mats lose by two
POTH — The first time that the Lady Matadors and Pirettes met on the basketball court this season, points were definitely at a premium.
Seguin’s defense was able to hold Poth star post player Tara Dunn to seven below her season average, as the Lady Matadors posted a 37-33 win in the championship game of their home tournament.
On Monday, the two teams met again — this time in Poth — for a rematch between two squads that came into the contest a combined 10-2 in their last 12 games.
The Pirettes (9-4), ranked No. 15 in Class 2A by TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine, were able to secure a victory this time around, picking up a 47-45 win just before the Christmas break.
The contest was tight the entire way, with Seguin (14-9) posting an 11-10 lead after one quarter and later heading into the locker room with that same one-point advantage.
The deciding quarter turned out to be the third, as the Pirettes scored a 10-7 win in the period to grab a slim two-point lead going into the fourth period.
The two teams each put up 13 in the final eight minutes, as the Lady Matadors were denied a second straight win over one of Class 2A’s best teams.
The loss didn’t take away from Brittany Valadez’s best scoring performance of the year, as the guard tied for a team-high with 11 points in the game.
Tabatha Richardson also scored 11 in the defeat, with Mona Martin adding 10 from the low block. LeeLee Logan added nine for Seguin, with Sabrina Rangel and D’Shericka Davis each chipping in two points apiece.
Dunn put in 14 to lead the Pirettes.
The Lady Matadors will have some time to rest before their next game, set for Dec. 29 against Sam Houston.
Seguin will host the Lady Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
