Shop owner checks out new landscaping trends
Published January 31, 2008
SEGUIN — Chilly winter days are a great time to plan improvements for the home landscape.
Garden Delights owner, Marilyn Anderson, just came back from market and is bubbling with enthusiasm about current decorating trends.
Her shop on Court Street next to Pape’s Pecan House looked more like a box factory recently as she unpacked the treasures she ordered.
“Texans are interested in extending their living space to the outside,” Anderson said. “The challenge is finding what people want. Different people are looking for different things.”
Some people enjoy cooking and eating outdoors.
Others want to make patios and wooden decks attractive for entertaining or just enjoying nature.
Fountains and water features for indoor or out are available in a variety of new sizes and styles.
A new addition from Anderson’s marketing trip is a water can fountain made near Waco.
“It can be placed in a flower bed to add a touch of interest,” Anderson said. “Fountains and statuary are really popular right now. People are always looking for something new and different.”
Down Under Pots from Australia can be used to grow everything from cherry tomatoes to orchids, Anderson said.
A plant is started in a hole in the bottom of the colorful glazed pot for two or three weeks, then the pot is turned over and hung up.
“I saw them at the Festival of Flowers in San Antonio,” Anderson said. “They’ve been around for a few years but not much in this area. People buy them for themselves and as unique gifts.”
Anderson opened Garden Delights last October and admits she has no retail experience.
“But I love to shop,” Anderson said. “I’m always looking for sales and pass the savings on to my customers. I try to find things people in this area will like.”
The shop carries a dazzling variety of arts and crafts as well as gardening supplies. Brightly beaded geckoes and butterflies compete with whimsical wooden ducks and metal bees and ladybugs for a visitor’s attention.
“Tinkling Toadstools are very unique and popular,” Anderson said. “We have wind chimes that hang and table top or “rain” chimes.”
Heather Bornemann drove past the store several times before deciding to stop and take a look.
“I was curious about what was here,” Bornemann said. “I like cute little country things. I was happy to see something like this instead of another convenience store.”
Anderson is a Junior Master Gardener Specialist and carries kits and child-size tools for gardening with children.
“Kids that garden have a better attitude,” Anderson said. “They learn to be accountable for growing things. It’s amazing how much kids enjoy gardening.”
Anderson said a children’s garden could be planted in a pot or a small plastic swimming pool.
For those wanting guaranteed gardening results, Aerogrow hydroponic garden kits will soon be available.
The kits include lights, nutrient packets and seed packet choices for growing herbs, salad greens, flowers or a design-it-yourself combination.
“This is like Gardening for Dummies,” Anderson said. “It’s foolproof. You can grow everything you need for a salad or herbs for cooking on a countertop or table.”
Garden Delights also has a tropical room filled with beach bags, beaded purses and keychains shaped like lizards, butterflies, dragonflies and frogs.
As a garden and nature boutique with a little bit of everything, Garden Delights is an entertaining place to visit on a wintry day too damp and chilly to be out in the garden.
