Marion clinches spot in playoffs

Published November 1, 2009

SAN ANTONIO — On Friday night, the Marion volleyball team (24-10, 8-5) posted its second 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-11, 25-19) over Poteet in a span of four days, officially punching the Lady Bulldogs’ ticket to the postseason.

Head coach Bernice Voigt said that her team once again played with “a lot of heart,” as seniors Ashley Jacobsen and Deidra Reasor dominated the net all match long.

“Our passing and communication was much better than it’s been,” Voigt said via e-mail. “I am very proud of each and every Lady Bulldog.”

Jacobsen came within three assists of recording a quadruple-double, finishing the match with 12 aces, 12 kills, 11 digs and seven assists. Reasor added five kills and two and a half blocks, while Shay Caddell posted a team-best 17 digs.

Hailey Speer and Ashley Torres finished with six kills apiece, with Lauren Franke dishing out 10 assists in Marion’s win at South San ISD’s Durbon Center.

Franke also chipped in two aces, while Diana Heinrich contributed another two and a half blocks.

The Lady Bulldogs will now prepare to face Palacios in the bi-district round of the playoffs, with the match set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Columbus High School.
