UPCOMING

PARENTS HELPING — All interested parents and middle and high school students are invited to the Wednesday, Nov. 4, meeting of Parents Helping Parents. Guest speaker Dale Gaubatz, director of admissions at Texas Lutheran University, will speak on Planning for College Admissions, to help parents and students start now to prepare for getting into college. The program begins at First Presbyterian Church, 305 N. King St., at 5:30 p.m. with a light supper and is over at 7 p.m. There is no charge, and activities will be provided for children 3 and up. VIETNAM VETS — Chapter 923 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will have it’s monthly meeting at the Fish Hatchery Building in San Marcos on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. The Fish Hatchery is located at 206 CM Allen Parkway (behind the Chamber of Commerce). All veterans who served between Feb. 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975, are eligible to join regardless of duty station.

REPUBLICAN WOMEN — The Guadalupe County Republican Women’s club is hosting “A Celebration of Thanks for Texas,” an hors d’oeuvre dinner, on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center (The Big Red Barn). The master of ceremonies is Justice Steve Hilbig of the 4th Court of Appeals and the auctioneer is State Rep. Edmund Kuempel. Proceeds from the event will support GCRW’s efforts to educate the community about conservative philosophies, as well as to contribute to the campaigns of Republican candidates in 2010. COMPUTER CLASSES — The Seguin-Guadalupe County Public Library will host the following computer classes: Mousercize on Friday, Nov. 6 from 1-2 p.m.; computer basics Friday, Nov. 6 at 2:30-4:30 p.m.; file management on Friday, Nov. 20 at 2-4 p.m. All classes are free and open to the public. SHELTER FUNDRAISER — The Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter will hold a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 6 from 4-7 p.m. at Central Park. For $5, participants will receive a spaghetti dinner. Or you can pick up your dinner plates at the intersection of River and East Donegan streets. Donations benefit the shelter, which provides a safe place for local victims of domestic violence. FRIDAY DANCE — The Silver Center Friday Night Dance will feature the music of Whiskey River on Nov. 6 from 7:3-11 p.m. Admission is $8. Homemade sandwiches are available for a light supper starting at 6:30 p.m.

MCQUEENEY POPPIES — McQueeney VFW Post No. 9213 and the Ladies Auxiliary will hold Poppy Days on Nov. 6 and 7 in McQueeney. Buddy Poppies will be available at the Pic-N-Pac No. 1 at Highway 78 and FM 725 and Pic-N-Pac No. 5 on Highway 725 and Pic-N-Pac No. 10 at the 123 Bypass and Court Street in Seguin. All donations are used to help local veterans, including 19 veterans in Hacienda Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center.

POPPY DAYS — The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 245 volunteers including Legionnaires, some of the American Legion and Juniors of the Auxiliary, along with Miss Poppy Lena Deharde will be distributing the nine-piece red crepe poppies on Poppy Days, Nov. 6-7 at Handy Andy, Wal-Mart Pic-N-Pac No. 8 to the public for a contribution to remember those men and women who fought and died defending our country. Poppy Days also honors all of the veterans who have willingly served their country in eight decades. The poppies are meant to be worn proudly on Veteran’s Day.

DAV CELEBRATION — The Disabled American Veterans, chapter 61. will hold a 45th anniversary and celebration on Nov. 7 at the National Guard Armory near the fairgrounds in Seguin. Tickets are $10 and the doors open at 7 p.m. The event includes a silent auction, door prizes and music by the Two Way Street Band.

CHOIR REHEARSAL — The first Thanksgiving Day of Praise Fall Concert will be hosted by Second Baptist Church, 609 S. Guadalupe St. The event will be held at 4 p.m. on Nov. 21. Scheduled rehearsals are 3 p.m. on Nov. 7 and a last rehearsal to be announced. FALL FESTIVAL — Seguin Chapter No. 555 Order of The Eastern Star will be hosting their annual Fall Harvest Festival and Craft Fundraiser on Nov. 7 from 4-7 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge,1945 W. Kingsbury St. in Seguin. Dinner will include stew and cornbread, iced tea or coffee and dessert. Handmade crafts will also be offered for sale. Proceeds are for scholarships and other local charities.

DAV CELEBRATION — The Disabled American Veterans will be celebrating 45 years of serving local veterans and their families in Seguin and surrounding areas. They will have a celebration and dance at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the National Guard Armory. The event will include an auction and music by Two Way Street. Tickets are $10.

KC BARBECUE — The Knights of Columbus Council No. 3412 will be selling barbecue chicken on Sunday, Nov. 8. Chicken will be sold after all the Sunday Masses at Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. James Catholic Churches. Also at the barbecue pits behind the K.C. Hall from 7 a.m. to noon. The price is $5 for a whole chicken.

VFW DANCE — The Tom Teboe Band will be playing fantastic country music at the Geronimo VFW 8456 Hall, Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3-6:30 p.m. door/kitchen opens at 2 p.m., at 6808 N Highway 123 in Geronimo. The hall is smoke-free and open to everyone. A $7 donation is requested. Proceeds benefit veterans/military programs. For information call 830-303-9903 or 830-379-1971.

CONCRETE CEMETERY — The Concrete Cemetery Association will meet Sunday, Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the GVEC meeting room located in La Vernia adjacent to the Nixon State Bank on Highway 87 West. BENEFIT CONCERT — The Palace Theatre will present the country/pop sounds of Natalie Rose as part of the Christian Cupboard Concert Series on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. Donations at the door for the concert series are $3 with a canned good or dry food item, $5 without. PARENTING CONNECTIONS — A new parenting course through the Texas AgriLife Extension will be offered on the first and second Monday of each month from 6-9 p.m. at 607 Jefferson Ave. There is a one-time fee of $30. For more information 830-379-2153. Course begins promptly at 6 p.m. and is no longer than three hours, snacks included. Certificates are presented when both sessions are completed.
