Katherine Schlafli Cagney

Katherine Schlafli Cagney, a fourth generation Texan, died peacefully of natural causes on Aug. 6, 2009.

Katherine’s great-grandfather, Johann Hollien, arrived from Germany just in time to serve with the Texan Army during the battle of San Jacinto.

Katherine was born in La Grange on Jan. 8, 1920, to Lella and Alfred Schlafli. The family moved to Seguin in 1927, where Katherine graduated with honors from Seguin High School.

She attended the University of Texas, where she also graduated with honors, being selected for Phi Beta Kappa. At the University, she pledged her beloved Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, with which she was active her entire life.

In 1943, Katherine married her loving husband, Richard B. (Dick) Cagney, who served as a Captain in the U.S. Army’s 340th Field Artillery during World War II. The family moved to Houston in 1952, when Dick went to work for Fluor Corporation. Katherine taught Sunday School at Bellaire Presbyterian Church, volunteered at Texas Children’s Hospital and devoted considerable time to Zeta Tau Alpha activities, serving one term as president of the Houston alumni group.

Katherine was an exceptional mother. Her warm and welcoming personality made the Cagney home a gathering place for her children’s friends. After her children were grown, their friends continued to drop by to visit with Katherine.

Katherine is survived by her children, Rick Cagney and wife, Marva Gay, Mike Cagney and wife, Margo, and David Cagney and fiancée, Lisa Majers; grandchildren, Miles Cagney and wife, Janine, and Travis Cagney and wife, Heather; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Carter, Beau, Kendall, Kaitlyn and Paige Cagney.

A visitation will take place from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 8, at Levy Funeral Directors. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 10, at San Geronimo Cemetery, 1620 East Walnut St., in Seguin, Texas.

Arrangements made by Levy Funeral Directors, 4525 Bissonnet, Bellaire, TX 77401, (713)660-6633.
