Falcons glide past Fellowship

Published February 17, 2010

SEGUIN — There was a moment in Tuesday night's area TAPPS playoff game where it looked like Arlington Fellowship would give Lifegate (18-8, 7-1) a tightly-contested battle.

But that moment didn't last long.

Once Lifegate began to find the range from beyond the three-point arc and wreak havoc with its full-court press, the Falcons cruised to another easy playoff win, defeating the Mustangs 98-72.

“One thing I really sell with the guys is that we are a full-court team,” said Lifegate head coach Trey Green. “It doesn’t matter how tall the other guys are or how strong they are, we’re a full-court team so it negates the height, and yeah, (the press) really came through for us.”

Lifegate also hit 14 three-pointers in the contest, with the biggest spark coming from sophomore Peter Schaeffer, who had just recently been inserted into the starting lineup by Green.

All he did to reward his coach was hit five treys in the game, including four in the first half.

“I told him in the locker room just now to make sure we shrink wrap his shooting hand to keep that thing hot,” Green said with a laugh.

Up 33-22 after a lightning-quick first period, the Falcons’ press flustered Fellowship in the second, as Lifegate opened the quarter on a 20-2 run to remove most of the drama that remained regarding the game’s outcome.

After going into the locker room up 57-26, Green began to substitute players and the Falcons cruised the rest of the way, setting up a Saturday showdown at 5 p.m. in Plano against reigning state champion Dallas Tyler Street.

“We’re looking forward to taking our game up there,” Green said of the matchup that will take place at John Paul II High School.

Against the Mustangs, junior Matt Akin led Lifegate with 18 points in the game, followed by 17 apiece from Schaeffer and Austin Swick.

The Falcons also got 13 points and great defense from David McCulloch, while Kolton Coffman and Gabe Galvan each added nine.

Tyler Swisher contributed four points, with the scoring rounded out by Dennis Ricketts (three), Caleb Tate (three), Hunter Hewell (three) and Brendan Gravett (two).
