100 block, East Kingsbury Street
SEGUIN — Police didn’t say, but if a local man wasn’t suffering from indigestion when booked into county jail early Monday, he might have been when he saw he drew an extra felony charge for evidence tampering — for allegedly eating crack cocaine.
Seguin Police Detective Lt. Johnny San Miguel said Jason Wayne Laster was stopped at about 12:30 a.m. Monday after a police officer saw him failing to signal a turn at Guadalupe and Kingsbury streets.
As the officer approached Laster’s window, the motorist was reported to be chewing something — with his head turned away.
Suspecting Laster might be trying to destroy drug evidence, the officer told him to get out of his pickup, San Miguel said.
There was a small white rock police say was crack cocaine on the seat of the vehicle, and police say he admitted to swallowing the remainder of a small quantity of the illegal drug.
He was booked for the alleged possession of less than one gram of a controlled substance, penalty group 1, and for tampering with drug evidence with the intent of impairing an investigation.
The original drug charge is a state jail felony punishable by six months to two years in a state jail and a fine of up to $10,000, San Miguel said.
Evidence tampering is a third degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in state prison and a $10,000 fine.
Laster posted $7,000 bail and was released from custody late Monday morning, San Miguel said.
His vehicle was impounded.
400 block, North Bauer Street
SEGUIN — A compact disc player was reported stolen in a vehicle burglary reported early Saturday afternoon.
According to a Seguin Police Department report, the victim reported parking a 1987 Mazda in front of the house at 1:30 a.m. Saturday — without locking its doors.
At 12:15 p.m., the vehicle was discovered to have been burglarized.
Police say it is important to always lock vehicles — even in your own driveway.
800 block, North Goodrich Street
SEGUIN — A pair of gold rings and an undisclosed amount of cash were reported taken in a burglary of a Goodrich Street home Friday evening.
According to a Seguin Police Department report, the money and the rings, worth $480, were discovered missing just before 10 p.m.
The owner of the property believes the burglar gained access through a side door.
700 block, Legette Street
SEGUIN — A 17-year-old Seguin youth was arrested Saturday afternoon on an allegation that could send him to prison for the rest of his life.
According to a Seguin Police Department report, Justin Jason Villarreal was booked into county jail for alleged burglary with intent to commit assault after an incident at a Legette Street home.
Police went to the residence at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday after someone called 9-1-1 — and hung up the phone.
Villarreal was stopped by an officer who was enroute to the home, and when police got to the victim’s house, they found a 32-year-old woman who had several bruises about her face.
Villarreal allegedly broke into the home and assaulted the victim, police say.
Burglary of a habitation is a third-degree felony. If committed as part of a theft, it is a second-degree felony. But burglary of a home with intent to commit a violent crime is a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years in prison.
Investigation into the incident continues.
Nelda and Boenig streets
A 20-year-old Seguin man who police say admitted dropping a baggie of marijuana from a vehicle Friday evening was booked on a misdemeanor drug charge, police say.
Edward J. Gonzales was booked for the alleged possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana after an 8:19 p.m. traffic stop initiated when the driver of a Suburban failed to properly signal a turn.
As the officer pulled the vehicle over, a small object was dropped from one of the left-side windows of the vehicle.
Gonzales, who was reportedly driving the vehicle, reportedly admitted ownership of the illegal weed, according to a Seguin Police Department report.
1300 block, East Court Street
SEGUIN — A 38-year-old Seguin resident was arrested on a theft allegation Friday night.
Police said Francisco Acosta was booked into Guadalupe County Jail on allegations of theft less than $1,500 with two or more previous convictions and evading arrest or detention in the wake of a 7 p.m. incident in which he was reported to have fled a store on a bike after stealing various items inside.
A responding police officer tried to stop Acosta as he crossed the parking lot while reportedly dropping items stolen from the store, but the suspect fled into a nearby fitness center, where his escape was cut off by a second officer and he was taken into custody, according to a police report.
County records reveal Acosta posted $3,000 bond and was released from custody Sunday.
