Man allegedly sent graphic texts to teen

Published April 15, 2009

SEGUIN — A 32-year-old San Antonio man has been arrested on allegations that he solicited a Guadalupe County child on-line — and attempted a sexual assault.

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Bruce Tubbs said John Calvin Hegedus was arrested in Guadalupe County on Monday after an investigation ordered by Sheriff Arnold Zwicke.

Hegedus was booked into Guadalupe County Jail on the allegations of online solicitation of a minor, and attempted sexual assault of a child.

If proved at trial, online solicitation of a minor between the ages of 14-17 is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000. If the child is under age 14, the offense is a second-degree felony and the exposure rises to 20 years in prison. Attempted sexual assault of a child is also a third-degree felony.

Hegedus’ bail is $200,000.

Tubbs said Tuesday night he could release few details of the investigation or the allegations. He did not say whether the child was male or female or give the age of the child. The allegation of attempted sexual assault of a child defines a child as being under 17.

“Our investigation is continuing and there will be more information released later,” Tubbs said.

Zwicke’s investigators opened their look into Hegedus’s activities after a couple came to the sheriff’s office with a complaint, Tubbs said.

“On Monday, the parents of a juvenile came to the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office to discuss a case involving an adult male text messaging their child, using graphic detail of specific sex acts he wanted to perform on the child,” Tubbs said in a news release issued just before 6 p.m. Tuesday. “Sheriff Zwicke instructed Investigator Craig Jones to immediately begin an investigation. During that investigation, probable cause was developed, and an arrest was made on John Calvin Hegedus that afternoon.”

Tubbs released no details of the arrest except to say that it occurred in Guadalupe County, and that he, Jones, Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Kevin Ficke and members of the county’s joint narcotics task force.

Zwicke said there was not believed to be any drug involvement in the case, but the narcotics officers commanded by Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Flores were involved because of their unique experience in undercover surveillance.

“I’m glad it all came together,” Zwicke said Tuesday night. “Once this family came forward, our officers moved on this pretty quick, and did a great job of pulling this investigation together.”

Zwicke said he was glad the family reported their concerns.

“We’re pleased to get this individual off the street,” Zwicke said.
