Pet party promises howling good time

Costumes and wigs are going to the dogs this year.
Hepzibah Hoffman-Rogers and Joy Williams, of Thunderpaws Canine Solutions, are hosting a party that any pet-in-disguise can enjoy.
“We have a great event planned for this weekend,” Hoffman-Rogers said. “It is a costume contest to help raise funds for the Paws in Prison program, called ‘All Howls Eve.’”
The festivities will take place on Friday starting at 6 p.m. at Thunderpaws, 206 S. Austin St., so it does not throw a kink into any trick-or-treater’s plans, Hoffman-Rogers said.
The contest is not limited to canine entries, Hoffman-Rogers said.
“We have two different contests going on. We have a live contest for dogs in costume and then we have a photo contest,” she said. “So, if it is not a dog and someone wants to dress up any kind of animal or themselves they can submit a photo. This is also for dogs that may be overwhelmed by the event, this way they can still participate and not be present.”
There is a $5 entrance fee per category but with eight divisions, there is no limit to how many categories a contestant may enter and win prizes donated by many local businesses, Hoffman-Rogers said.
“In both the live and photo we have a cutest, most creative, and scariest,” she said. “And in the live contest most outrageous and in the photo contest most unusual.”
The downtown pet store has pre-made outfits for sale but homemade ones are welcome, Hoffman-Rogers.
“We do have a selection of costumes if people want to purchase something but we are also encouraging them to be creative,” she said.
Treats will be available for both the contestants and their owners, Hoffman-Rogers said.
“Papa Murphy’s is generously donating pizzas both for dogs and for people,” she said. “For the dogs, it’s up to them ultimately, but when I spoke to them we talked about going easy on the sauce and the cheese and adding pineapple and beef which the dogs really like and it’s healthy for them.”
The proceeds will go toward a the Paws in Prison program in Lockhart, Hoffman-Rogers added.
The inmates work with dogs from area animal shelters on obedience training, to give them a better chance at finding a home.
“We feel so strongly about the Paws in Prison program that we are very excited that we will be able to raise money for them,” Hoffman-Rogers said. “People in Seguin are really great about coming out and supporting all sorts of things and they really seem to enjoy a chance that help others.”

“This is going to be a really great time,” Hoffman-Rogers said.
