SEGUIN — City Council turned its attention to roadsides during Tuesday’s meeting.
City Engineer Joe Ramos said that new sidewalks may also soon make an appearance along Seguin roadsides.
In 2007, the city applied for a grant as part of the National Safe Routes to School program, which is meant to ensure that students have safe sidewalks and crossings as they go to and from school.
A grant was awarded for the Patlan area and the Texas Department of Transportation began working with the city on plans to construct sidewalks near Patlan’s campus.
“We’ll be going out for construction bids soon,” Ramos said.
Councilman Manuel Cevallos said that, after working hard to get sidewalks near the school, he couldn’t wait to see the project begin.
“I want to add how glad and excited I am for the commencement of this much needed project,” Cevallos said. “I remember when I first came on council and worked diligently with the city for the sidewalk on Martindale Street going to Patlan School.”
Planning Director Don Smith said a joint project between the city and the Texas Department of Transportation is moving forward and work is expected to begin in the spring.
“The project is commencing this month, they’re already getting water service for the irrigation system,” he said.
Smith said the work will be partially funded by stimulus money and includes five areas: State Highway 46 North at Interstate 10; S.H. 46 North at the FM 78 interchange; the juncture of I-10 and U.S. Highway 90 West; State Highway 123 at the 123 Bypass split (near the Continental plant); U.S. 90 Alternate at Lullwood Drive; and FM 464 at U.S. 90 W.
