Curnel, Lawson choose NMMI

Published January 26, 2010

SEGUIN — If the current trend continues, Roswell, N.M. will soon be known more for Matadors than aliens.

On Monday afternoon, two more Seguin baseball players — seniors Ronnie “Bubba” Lawson and Jared Curnel — signed letters of intent to play for New Mexico Military institute, joining former Matador teammates Jared Nieto and Donald Fennell, who are currently freshmen at NMMI.

And Curnel said it’s no coincidence that he and Lawson chose to play for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Broncos.

“They were a big factor in getting us up here,” Curnel said of Nieto and Fennell’s influence. “I just wanted to go there to play with somebody I already knew so I’m comfortable up there and it’s not totally new.

“It’s the sport that (Ronnie and I) love, so it’ll be a great opportunity for both of us.”

In a short ceremony at Seguin High School, the two players made it official by signing letters of intent to play for NMMI in front of friends, family and coaches.

And seeing as Curnel and Lawson both pitch — as do Nieto and Fennell — Lawson said there’s a chance that the Broncos’ starting rotation could be an all-Seguin lineup.

“Coach said we may go one, two, three, four as Seguin players starting up there,” Lawson said.

Besides pitching, Curnel plays first base for the Matadors, while Lawson uses his speed to patrol center field.

And before they head off to New Mexico, each sees some unfinished business to take care of during their senior seasons on the diamond at SHS.

“First, get to the playoffs,” Lawson said of this year’s goals.

“And a district championship,” added Curnel.
