More rain expected for county

Published October 6, 2009

SEGUIN — When it rains in Guadalupe County, it pours.

The county saw several inches of rain this week, putting a good dent in the drought, but not quite ending it. Seguin saw 13.74 inches for 2009 through August.

September brought some rain relief and gave 4.94 inches, and the few days of October had a rainfall of 3.63.

Paul Yura, of the National Weather Service, said other areas of Guadalupe County were hit hard by the recent rains. The McQueeney area saw over 11 inches of rain, while the Schertz area saw close to 12 inches, and the New Berlin area topped the rain gauges with over 14 inches.

The National Weather Service said they are expecting frontal systems to move through the area that will carry high chances of showers. Yura said because of the ground saturation, there is a chance of flooding.

Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Kinsey also said there is a possibility of some flooding if the area receives more rain.

“We could very easily have more flooding,” Kinsey said. “Watch out for low water crossings. Don’t wait for official warnings, be cautious ahead of time. If you are a new resident along the river, talk to your neighbors about past flood instances so you will have a better idea of what to expect.”

Yura said, while the rain did provide some relief, Seguin isn’t in the clear of a drought yet.

“We’ve seen some significant improvements over the last 30 days, but we’re not out yet,” Yura said. “We have some huge deficits built up over the last two years. All this water is going to run off into the creeks and rivers, but we need a long, steady rain to really get down into the soil.”

The rain amount in 2009 is greatly improving the deficit from the past two years. The National Weather Service reports the total rainfall for 2008 to only be 16.84 inches, while so far, the 2009 total is about 22.31 inches.
