Wet weather hits the county
Published September 10, 2009
SEGUIN — After months without any real measurable precipitation, Guadalupe County was showered upon with a steady rainfall on Wednesday.
National Weather Service meteorologist Amanda Fanning said rainfall totals from around the county ranged from 0.1 inch to 1.5 inches of rain.
“Towards the southern end of the county some areas got about an inch or so, the radar estimated south of New Berlin,” she said. “The rest of the area ranged from 0.1-0.3 inches.”
But this is not the end of the precipitation.
Cristy Mitchell, NWS meteorologist, said the area can expect to see more rain for the next three days.
“We have a very good chance at measurable rain everywhere,” she said. “Rainfall probabilities starting Thursday, we are looking at a 70 percent chance of rain. Then on Friday the chance of rain is 70 percent and then it drops off a bit to 60 percent on Saturday. Then it goes way down to 20 percent on Sunday night.”
Mitchell said the system that is dropping the precipitation will start to move out of the area by the end of weekend.
“By Monday we will be back down to routine with typical South Texas south-east wind at the surface but with a dry wind at upper levels,” she said.
But that does not mean the weather will return to the summer heat. With the seasonal changes, Mitchell predicts the triple-digit days are over for 2009.
“The chance of a 100 degree day again is really, really slim. The days are getting shorter, the angle of the sun is lowering on the horizon, and the seasonal rotation is working toward keeping our temperatures down,” she said.
The future is looking bright but not too bright, Mitchell said.
“The climate prediction center says the chances for rain in the future are going up,” she said. “For the fall period there is above normal chance of rainfall.”
With the rain storms usually comes slick roads and possible fires due to lightning strikes. But Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Slaughter said with this system there were not any weather related accidents or fires that were reported.
“We did have a minor motor vehicle accident this morning but I don’t believe it had to do with the weather,” he said.
