UT-Dallas eliminates Bulldogs
Published May 3, 2009
CLINTON, Miss. — After a successful regular season that ended with the program’s seventh American Southwest Conference West Division title in nine years, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs saw their season come to an abrupt end after losing their first two games in the conference double-elimination tournament this weekend at Mississippi College.
The Bulldogs were eliminated by the UT-Dallas Comets 10-7 in 10 innings Saturday, one day after falling to UT-Tyler 7-6 in the opening game of the ASC Championship tournament.
First baseman Johnny Martinez hit a three-run home run to deep right field off pitcher Jeremiah Steinert in the top of the tenth inning to claim the lead for the Comets and quiet the TLU dugout.
It was an especially harsh blow to the stomach for the Bulldogs, who had erased a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.
TLU trailed UT-Dallas 7-4 heading into the final at-bat, but the Bulldogs eventually tied the game on Kyle Harvey’s two-out single that turned into extra bases on a fielding error and allowed Chris Green to score.
A Chris Siniff RBI groundout that plated Drew Farr and a wild pitch that scored Cody Miller accounted for the other TLU runs in the inning.
The error on Harvey’s single allowed the senior from Houston to reach third base and represent the winning run. However, Comets pitcher Mason Thompson ended the rally with a three-pitch strikeout of Andrew Femath.
UT-Dallas starting pitcher Brandon Dinwiddie all but silenced the Bulldog bats through eight innings. Dinwiddie allowed four hits through the eighth inning, though three of them were home runs, accounting for all of TLU’s first four runs.
Jeremy Macklin and Femath hit solo home runs for the Bulldogs in the second and third innings, respectively. Ryan Nokelby knocked a two-run homer for TLU in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Macklin, a senior transfer from Huston-Tillotson University, also started on the mound and pitched seven innings, giving up five earned runs on 11 base hits. The five runs were the most the Austin native had allowed during any start this season.
Late rallies by their opposition doomed the Bulldogs in both of their contests. TLU was poised to advance to the winner’s bracket semifinal on Friday, but a three-run rally by UT-Tyler in the top of the ninth inning stunned the Bulldogs and sent them to the elimination bracket.
The Patriots did most of the damage in the ninth inning to TLU closer Tom Hembree. Brad Orosey pitched the first eight innings of that contest.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 30-14.
Elsewhere in the ASC
IRVING — Like the TLU baseball team, the Schreiner softball squad also had an abbreviated stay in the ASC tournament, but it too marked a return to postseason play for the school in Kerrville.
And the Mountaineers had a much longer wait.
With Navarro alumna Rachel Herzog and Marion High School alumnae Rebecca Hay and Ashley Bouthot seeing the playing field regularly for the Mountaineers, Schreiner made its first ASC playoff appearance in any team sport since the 1999-2000 academic year.
