Maxwell H. Davis

Maxwell H. Davis of Seguin, Texas passed on Sept. 9, 2009. He was the oldest son of Hubbard and Myrtle Davis of Cross Roads, Texas. Maxwell was born on April 12, 1917. He was born into a farming family in Cass County, East Texas.

He attended Cross Roads School for elementary and middle school and Hughes Springs High School.

Maxwell excelled in sports, including baseball, football and basketball. He also played semi-professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1930s.

Maxwell entered the US Marine Corp in 1935 and served until 1939.

He was a drill instructor at Camp Pendleton, California. He was also assigned to the USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37) and served as President Roosevelt’s orderly for the South American “Goodwill Tour” of 1939.

He left the Marine Corp in 1940, but jobs were scarce so he rejoined the US Navy in late 1940. He rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, being discharged in 1946, after World War II.

At the beginning of the war he served on the destroyer USS Corry (DD-463) patrolling for German Submarines in the Atlantic Ocean. Later, Maxwell tried his hand at being a submariner on the USS Swordfish (SS-193) but was forced to give up the submariner’s life due to high blood pressure.

He spent the remainder of the war on the USS Louisville (CA-28) a heavy cruiser that was involved in the battles of Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Aleutian Islands, Saipan Island, Marianas Islands, Leyte Gulf and Okinawa Island.

After World War II, Maxwell moved to Houston, met his wife of 60 years, Bridgett Napoleon, married and raised a family.

He worked for the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro) for 33 years, retiring in 1980.

He spent the next 29 year enjoying his hobbies of fishing, gardening, sports, dominoes and entertaining his grandchildren.

Maxwell was preceded in death by his two younger brothers, Harold Davis and Hubbard Davis, Jr. Survivors include: wife, Bridgett Davis, daughter, Elizabeth Davis, two sons, Keith Davis and James Hardin. Sister, Jonel Davis and Sister in law, Joyce Davis, Two daughter in laws: Brigette Neal and Jackie Hardin.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Dawn, Michael, Christopher and Maxwell Hardin; Brent Murrell; Brandalyn Spence and Amber Morton and ten great grandchildren: Aiden Spence, Alyssa Murrell; Crystal, James, Cheyenne Hardin; Master Hardin; Ryan, Deaven and Brandon Hardin .

Viewing of the body will be from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 at the Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin, Texas. Funeral services for family only will be at the Goetz Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009. Interment will be at the Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
