Esteban Castillo

SEGUIN — A 61-year-old former resident of Guadalupe County headed to trial Monday on charges that could have imprisoned him for the rest of his life. But instead he pleaded guilty Monday morning to having an improper relationship with a minor in exchange for a sentence of 17 years in prison.

A jury pool had been impaneled and voir dire — the process of picking a jury — was set to begin in 2nd 25th Judicial District Court Judge W.C. Kirkendall’s courtroom when Esteban Chavez Castillo, 61, pleaded guilty to an allegation of engaging in prohibited sexual conduct with his niece — whom he later married.
